Eclipse Stakes Records
Repeat Wins
A total of five horses have won the Eclipse Stakes twice running. The earliest racer to do this was Orme - owned by the Duke Of Westminster - in 1892 and 1893. Most recently, Halling, trained by Saeed bin Suroor and owned by Godolphin, won the 1995 and 1996 races, both times by a neck.
No horse has yet managed to win three consecutive Eclipse Stakes races.
Eclipse/Epsom Doubles
Since 1946, a total of three horses have won the Eclipse Stakes after winning the Epsom Derby of the same year. Tulyar won both races in 1952 and Mill Reef secured a double in 1971. The last double was scored by Nashwan, in 1989.
In addition, two horses - St Paddy in 1961 and Royal Palace in 1968 - won the Eclipse the year after winning at Epsom.
One, Two, Three Win
In 1998, three Godolphin-owned horses, all trained by Saeed bin Suroor, took first, second and third places in the Eclipse Stakes. With jockey Frankie Dettori, Daylami won the race. He was followed by Faithful Son and then Central Park.
This was the first time that the same owner and trainer managed to secure all three places in a Group 1 race.
Eclipse Stakes Records: Trainers and Jockeys
For six years straight, from 1993 to 1998, the Eclipse Stakes winners were trained by either Sir Michael Stoute or Saeed bin Suroor, with both trainers claiming three wins each. Saeed bin Suroor, top trainer for Godolphin, added another Eclipse Stakes win in 2004. Sir Michael Stoute, who is master of the Freemason Lodge in Newmarket, went on to win the Eclipse Stakes in 2001 and, most recently, in 2007 - making him the most successful of Eclipse Stakes trainers, with a total of five victories.
Michael Kinane currently holds the Eclipse Stakes record for the most successful jockey, with a total of three wins. He rode Hawk Wing to victory in 2002, Pilsudski in 1997 and Opera House in 1993.
